HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF FINANCIAL STUDIES
The Department of Financial Studies is one of the four (4) Departments in the Faculty of Management Sciences, which was carved out in May 2016 after the assumption of office by the then Vice Chancellor, Professor Abdalla Uba Adamu, in reference to the Departmental system occasioned by the Senate decision at its meeting of 10th May, 2016.
Prior to 2016, the Accounting and Banking and Finance programmes have been in the defunct School of Management Sciences (SMS). As at now, the Department has the following programmes:
- B.Sc. Accounting
- B.Sc. Banking and Finance
The department secured full accreditation status for the two undergraduate programmes by National Universities Commission (NUC) in 2020. Proposals are at advanced stages at the University level to commence post graduate programmes in Accounting and Finance which include the following:
- PGD Accounting
- B.Sc. Accounting
- PhD Accounting
- PGD Banking and Finance (started and suspended at some point before 2018)
- B.Sc. Banking and Finance
- PhD Banking and Finance
Over the years, the Department has graduated different sets of students who are doing well in the industry. We have also received reports that our graduates are now the choicest brides of foreign institutions as they have been exposed to the technology driven mode of learning which no doubt was re-echoed by the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic that created vista of opportunities for virtual and blended education. The Department prides with the best academic and non-academic staff with robust experience profiles and academic qualifications. The department has attracted the services of very distinguished professors like Professor Wilfred Iyiegbuniwe of University of Lagos and Professor Ruth Uhrogide of Benson Idahosa University, Benin on sabbatical assignment.
The department is in useful discussions with top notch professional bodies such as the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) and the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) for seamless linkages and partnerships.
In sequential order, the mantle of leadership of the Department of Financial Studies has been steered by the following staff:
- Ofe I. Inua (Associate Professor) 2016 – 2018
- Abdullahi S. Araga (Senior Lecturer) 2018 -2020
- Johnson I. Okoh (Associate Professor) 2020 – Date
More than ever, we shall continue to make very practical efforts towards satisfying every student through proper academic guidance and timely resolution of students’ complaints.
Thank you.
