1.0 ABOUT THE PROGRAMME:
The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) was established in the year 1983 to meet the need for an open and as well as distance learning in Nigeria. Although the NOUN’S Operation Suspended in 1984, the then Administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo revived it in the year 2001. The faculty started as School of Management and Human Resources 2002, was changed to School of Management Sciences in 2013, and to Faculty of Management Sciences in 2016. There are three (3) departments in the faculty: Department of Administration, Department of Entrepreneurial Studies, and the Department of Financial Studies.
The faculty currently runs two (2) Master degree programmes: MBA Business Administration and Master of Public Administration (MPA); and is in process of establishing the M.Sc. Business Administration programme. The PGD Business Administration programme serves as a feeder to the Master programmes. The programme is designed to provide students without a university honours degree, those with a third class B.Sc. degree, Higher National Degrees, and those wishing to change fields, with an opportunity to advance their careers in the field of management. It provides a solid foundation for the diverse economic disciplines which relate to the needs of business, industry and government. It aims to provide manpower for the academia and the industry.

1.3 DURATION OF THE PROGRAMME
Minimum Duration of the Post Graduate Diploma in Business Administration is one year (1year) of two semesters and a maximum of two years (2 years) of four semesters under flexible mode of study.

2.1 Philosophy
The philosophy of the Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration is to provide basic and remedial training in Management for the purpose of preparing students for higher studies in Business Administration – Masters in Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Science degree in Business Administration (M.Sc.)Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) and (PhD programmes respectively.

- AIM AND OBJECTIVES
3.1 Aim
The Post Graduate Diploma in Business Administration Programme is aimed at producing young graduates, male and female and other qualified interested individuals in the society to become qualified business and financial analysts / experts.
3.2 Objectives
The objectives of the programme are to:
- Develop the competency of students in understanding the basic principles and concepts in Management and utilizing them in practice; and
- Equip students with basic knowledge and technique of managerial problem-solving and decision-making relevant to both the private and public sector organizations.
4.0 ENTRY REQUIREMENT
To be admitted for the Post Graduate Diploma in Business Administration programme, a candidate must possess:
- A minimum of third-class degree in Business Administration, Management, Marketing, Human Resources Management, Financial Management, Accounting, Economics, Banking & Finance, or any other Social Science discipline.
- A minimum of second-class (honours) degree for applicants from other programmes not mentioned in (i) above.
- Candidates who possess HND with Lower Credit in Business Administration or any one of the other relevant courses listed in (i) above may also be considered for admission to undertake the programme.

5.1 Programme Structure
The programme consists of course work and research project. The programme is structured for two (2) semester duration.
5.2 Degree Rules
To be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration, the student must pass a minimum of 30 and a maximum of 34 credits including Research Project. The 32 credit units are distributed as follows:
- Fourteen core courses (2 credits each, including GST 707) – 30 units
- Research Project – 4 units

GST 707: GOOD STUDY GUIDE————-2CREDIT UNITS
This course is intended to provide a proper study guide to students. The course outline includes the following:
Getting Started: How to use the book, why read about study skills, getting yourself organized, what is studying all about, reading and note-taking: introduction, reactions to reading, your reading strategy, memory, taking notes, conclusion. Other ways of studying: Introduction, learning in groups, takes and lectures, learning from T.V and Radio broadcasts, other study media. Working with numbers: Getting to know numbers, describing the world, describing the tables, describing with diagrams and graphs; The importance of writing; How to write essays; the craft of writing, the advantages of treating essay writing as a craft, making your essay flow, making a convincing case, the experience of writing and preparing for examination.
BUS 714: PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT 2CREDIT UNITS
The development of management thought; theories and models of management; the manager and his environment; organization structure and relationships; leadership and motivation; organization development, the management functions and procedures; planning; organizing; directing; controlling etc.
ACC757: PRINCIPLES OF ACCOUNTING 2CREDIT UNITS
This course deals with the underlying theory of double entry book keeping. Topics include: the nature, scope and purpose of accounting, theories and mechanics of double entry, book- keeping statements, fixed accounts, funds flow statements, account of not-for-profit organizations, incomplete records.
PAD 747: INTRODUCTION TO PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION 2CREDIT UNITS
This is an introductory course which examines the nature and scope of business activities. Topics include the concept of business administration and its distinction from public administration; functional areas of business finance, production, marketing etc; source of financing business activities; retail outlets and marketing channels; commercial documents; bills of exchange and entrepreneurial development.
MKT 730: FUNDAMENTALS OF MARKETING 2CREDIT UNITS
This course focuses on the appreciation of functions and channels of marketing and its role in the corporate environment. Major elements of marketing strategy in relation to product development; distribution channels; advertising, sales promotion and pricing are examined in detail.
BFN 715: PRINCIPLES OF FINANCE 2CREDIT UNITS
This course provides a systematic and vigorous examination of the theoretical framework of financial /investment management analysis. Main topics include: The economic theory of choice: investment decision and appraisal techniques, financial requirement planning, working capital management, financial ratio, dividend decision, cash budgeting, fixed assets and equity management, funds flow statement and emphasis on financial markets.
ECO 711: MICRO-ECONOMICS THEORY 1 2CREDIT UNITS
The areas of concentration in this course are Economic system and organization, demand and supply, individual consumer behaviour, the utility and indifference curve approaches. Other areas are Market classifications, the principles of production, the firm and perfect competition, pure monopoly, monopolistic and oligopolistic competitions, pricing and employment of resources
ECO 712: MACRO-ECONOMICS THEORY 1 2CREDIT UNITS
The emphasis of this course is on the macro, or aggregative aspect of the economy. Topics include National Income Account, the Determination of the Level of Aggregate Output, Employment and Prices; the Monetary system: Monetary and Fiscal Policies; Economic Growth and International Monetary Economics
BUS 720: HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT 2CREDIT UNITS
Topics to be addressed in this course include nature and scope of HRM; strategies and management practices in manpower planning; staffing; human resource planning; human resource training and development; performance measurement and management, career planning and employee welfare; compensation designs and reward management.
CIT 705: COMPUTER APPLICATIONS IN BUSINESS 2CREDIT UNITS
This course explains the why and how of computers, the use of computers in business and other organizations; Data transmission, nature, speed and error detection. It also examines systems analysis and design, the programming process; problem definition, flow charting and decision table.
BUS 729: BUSINESS MATHEMATICS 2CREDIT UNITS
Revision of basic algebra; set theory; permutations and contributions; annuity, cash flow; functions and functional relationship; analysis of marginal utility and integral calculus; partial and total deliveries. In discussing these topics, emphasis will be on their specific relevance to business/ management contents.
BUS722: BUSINESS STATISTICS: 2CREDIT UNITS
This course covers basic concepts in descriptive and inferential statistics and their use in empirical research.
BUS726: GLOBAL ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT– 2CREDIT UNITS
Topics to be treated in this course include Nigerian and the global economy, the implications of the free market economy on business; governments, consumers and labour; strategic aspects of international trade, globalization and international institutions, multilateral negotiations and lessons from Asian tigers.
FMS731: RESEARCH METHODOLOGY 2CREDIT UNITS
The objective of this course is to introduce the students to scientific enquiry through gathering and analysis of relevant data.
BUS 790: RESEARCH PROJECT 4 CREDITS
A research based study and report on an acceptable management problem area approved by the supervisor or Head of Department.
- INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS AND DELIVERY
As NOUN is a distance learning Institution, instructional method is through facilitation at the Study centres. Students are to study essentially on their own by creating their own convenient learning environment. Face to face tutoring would only be handled by Instructional Facilitators at the designated Study Centres for specified periods based on credit loading of the course. Delivery of course material is in print medium. Future use of video and audiotapes, radio and television broadcast, CD-Rom and e-learning to complement the print material are in the offing.
9.1 Language of Instruction
The language of instruction is English language.
9.2 Course Development
Some of the course materials for this programme were adapted from already existing courses in other programmes while others were newly developed.
- QUALITY ASSURANCE
To maintain quality, the course materials were written or adapted by both experienced in-house staff, edited by external assessors and validated in accordance with NOUN standard
- EVALUATION
Students would be evaluated at the end of each semester based on the following:
11.1 Tutor-Marked Assignments (TMA)
There is a Tutor Marked Assignment at the end of every unit of a course material. Students are advised to attempt all the assignments. They will be assessed on the best 3 performances out of 4 indicated for assessment. The assignments carry 30%.
11.2 End of Semester Examination
At the end of each semester, an end of term examination is administered to the students; this examination carries 70% of the total marks.
11.3 Dissertation/Research Project
Each student will have approved for him/her a topic of research at the end of the first Semester. He/she will be expected to produce a well researched dissertation containing a minimum of 10,000 and a maximum of 15,000 words (40-60 pages of A4 paper) under a supervisor approved by the University. The dissertation must demonstrate the following:
- a) Clear evidence of reflection or reaction to the area being studied
- b) Review of domestic and international approaches to the subject of the dissertation.
- c) A study of the subject in a private sector organization.
11.4 Award Of Degrees
A student shall qualify for the award of a degree when he/she shall have:
- Completed and passed all the courses he/she registered for, including all compulsory and elective courses as may be specified by the University.
- Earned the minimum credit units of not less than 30.
- Obtained the minimum cumulative GPA specified by the University or scored not less than:
- 30.0 percent of total TMA scores and 70 Percent of final examination scores
- Any student who fails to meet the minimum requirement for the award of degree may be referred in that course(s) and can only be allowed a maximum of 3 consecutive carry-overs. .
- STAFF
The National Open University of Nigeria runs the PGD programme with its staff in the Faculty of Management Sciences, supported on the field by instructional facilitators who are situated at the various study centres of the University.

12.1 Facilitators/Supervisors:
There are a number of facilitators provided for the students at the various Study centres. Each facilitator holds a minimum of a master’s degree and university teaching experience.
12.2 Admission and Registration Procedures
Admission and Registration procedures are on-line based. Students are required to purchase their admission forms from any of nominated banks and then fill the form and submit on-line. Admission lists as well as individual students’ admission letter for successful candidates are published on NOUN web-sites. Students are also expected to complete their registration procedure On-line.
- LEARNER’S SUPPORT
There is a Directorate of Learners support established by the University to take care of student academic and administrative needs at all study centres through Counsellors’ and facilitators.
- RECOGNITION OF THE PROGRAMME
The contents of the programme have been benchmarked against the National Universities Commission (NUC). The nation in general and public service in particular are in dire need of availing opportunities for self-development which can be met by this programme.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration is a programme designed to prepare young graduates and other qualified interested individuals in the society , both males and female for higher degrees in Business Administration, such as Master degree in Business Administration and subsequently a Doctorate degree in Business Administration, if they so desire to go further. The acquisition of a higher degree in Business Administration, which is a very versatile course of study is important as there are diverse employment opportunities in almost all the sectors in the economy as successful graduates can work in the banking sector, the oil and gas sector, educational sector, telecommunication sector, religious organizations, federal and state parastatals, NGOs, to mention but a few. The successful graduates may also choose to launch their own businesses and become entrepreneurs.
